Bob’s advice? "Think hard and honestly about the worst thing that can happen, then get back to work."
Hard-won Wisdom
It’s a lesson the CEO learned while in Vietnam in the late 60s. "I remember sitting on the wall of an old French fort and looking out over the valley and thinking, ‘I have no idea what this terrain is like, I’ve never been in a war, I’m only 18, I’m fighting guys who know this area like the back of their hand, I’m the replacement for a guy who just got killed’ – on and on like that," recalls Bob. "That’s when it hit me: I was going to die there. And the weird thing is, the moment I accepted that, suddenly I was fine."
Years later, Bob would have a similar epiphany in 2001 while weighing whether or not to pull the plug on Go Daddy.
"What was my worst case?" he remembers asking himself. "I might go broke. So what? Who cares? Would I be all right? Of course I would." With that, Bob stopped worrying and got back to business.
